Why do you need your equipment inspected and tested?

The main reason you need your equipment tested and inspected is because, like load proof testing for chains and other bits of rigging equipment, it is a mandated standard to have your harness and height safety equipment inspected/tested regularly. 
 The main reason to have equipment inspected and/or tested is to ensure the safety of all those who use the equipment.

How often should equipment be inspected and tested? 

There’s no one answer to that question, but the gold standard is to have items such as harnesses, fall arrest devices and equipment  tested every 3 months by a professional, however to comply with mandatory standards you must only do it once a year, by a professional. If equipment is used regularly, we strongly suggest having items inspected and tested to the gold standard of inspection every 3 months, as deterioration can happen quickly and be subtle in presentation.  
We use the RGBY system, which is the gold standard in safety and inspection. The RGBY system allocates colours. RED is January to March; GREEN is April to June; BLUE is July to September, and YELLOW is October to December. Failure to comply with this standard may leave you liable if anything happens.

During our audits this skill is vital as we know where wear and tear happens and common problems arise, and we are always on the lookout for these issues on top of our set work.

Failure To Comply 

As of July 1st 2020, If you fail to comply with safety standards and/or maintaining a safe environment and death occurs you can now be charged with Workplace Manslaughter 

The highest penalty under the WHS Act (Safe Work Australia) is $600,000 or 5 years imprisonment or both for individuals and $3,000,000 for a body corporate.
